Mother’s Day - A Royal Event

Posted by admin on April 30, 2008 in Lifestyle Management

Mother’s Day is truly a Holiday for that very special person in
your life that has catered to, taken care of, and brought you to
where you are today! She has served countless meals, washed
thousands of dishes, kissed hundreds of “owies” and has been
there to hold your hand for those monumental catastrophes as
well as little “molehill” disappointments . While you may not
have agreed with everything she did or say, you could always
count on her love and care.

Serve her royally, give her only the very best, and watch the
delight in her eyes. Enjoy!

MONTH OF MAY OMELET 2 cups of her favorite springtime fruit,
such as strawberries, bananas, pears, early peaches, blue-
berries, etc.

1/3 cup plain yogurt 2 tbs. honey

1/4 tsp. ground cinnamon 1 tbs. butter

2 eggs, well beaten 2 ozs. mild cheddar cheese, grated Edible
flowers for garnish

In a small bowl, stir together the yogurt and honey. Gently add
the cinnamon. Set the mixture aside.

Melt 1 tbs. butter in a pan over medium heat. Pour in the well
beaten eggs.. As the ends of the omelet begin to dry, lift it
gently so that the re- mainder of the egg mixture can cook.
Remove the omelet to a warm plate. Sprinkle the mild cheddar
onto the cooked omelet. Place under broiler for 1 min. until
cheese is melted and the eggs are done.

Spread 1-1/2 cups of the fruit mixture onto the omelet. Top
with a dollop of the yogurt mixture. Fold the omelet over the
fruit. Spoon the remaining fruit over the folded omelet. Garnish
with a spoonful of the yogurt and the edible flowers.

Not only great tasting, and very special, but beautiful to
behold as well .

With this omelet, serve a fresh, hot cup of coffee or tea (with
lemon slice).

Also using frozen hash-brown potatoes, add 1/2 cup of finely
diced white onion, for that very unique touch.

Meat: 2 slices of hickory bacon or maple flavored pork sausage
links, or honey ham. A nicely toasted English muffic, with a pat
of butter placed on a small plate with a lacy paper doilie
beneath the muffin. .

Place fresh flowers in a bud vase, add a linen napkin tied with
yarn, in your mother’s favorite color. A hand- made card signed
by everyone adds that lovely personal touch.

You have just made Mom - Queen for a Day!

Special Note: If mom is far away and you cannot travel on
Mother’s Day, try telephoning, and let all the kids say HI.

When you send a card, enclose a few special treats - such as
pretty flowery postage stamps, a roll of elegant address labels,
or a unique checkbook covered that you made by applying contact
paper to a pre-existing cover, but personalizing it as only you
could.

If mom is in a care facility, make it a top priority to-do item
to visit. Bring along gifts that she will enjoy and treasure:
hairpins or combs that you have hot-glued birthstones of each of
her children or grandchildren; picture frames using this same
technique and include a collage of small photos . Teddy bears
(small), stuffed animals, small boxes to hold “special” things,
lap quilts, or personal items in a carrying case you made just
for her. Sure, store bought items are beautiful, but
hand-made are exceptionally enduring and comforting to hold and
admire time after time . Thank you.

Media Put The Cat Out

Posted by admin on in Music + Musicians

Seventies music to me was the best of what I dreamed of. It gave me a sense of relation to the world. I was drawn in like a moth to light through the emotion and meaning hidden in the lyrics.

I was thinking about the old days when I was hit with a moment of sobering and sad reflection after reading an article in December 8 issue of Fort Collins’ Forum. Trena Anastasia has words of wisdom imploring others, in a broad sense, to watch what they say. Her article is titled “A We-Mage of Respect” not an “I-Mage of Respect”, which impressed me. We all need to take stock of the word respect. She states, “…we must as a united people, present ourselves as a nation that respects the perspectives of others. We have to listen and care.”

Recollection of an incident in February of 1989 flickered. The media released a spurious headline that all but ruined the life of a great musician and dammed the flow of useful stories in his meaningful lyrics.

We may not agree with others perspectives and perception of life, but we have an obligation to discern when and where to utilize our “freedom of speech.” Having rights through the First Amendment does not give us the right to barrage others with our opinion in hurtful and negative ways.

Remember Cat Stevens? He said, “The problem with a society that believes in absolute freedom is that they’re living in a dream, because there is no such thing… There has never been a time when people haven’t been compelled to follow certain rules. They’ve forgotten that along with freedom must come responsibility, and liberation is a different word from freedom.”

Yes, that musician I speak of is Cat Stevens. He is a living legend in the world of music. I am not musically inclined and frankly haven’t listened to much music since those days. I think maybe because the heart and soul I related to disappeared when Cat did.

He had become a convert to Islam and was harangued over it universally. From then to 1995 he was out of the music world and those, like myself, really missed him. He kept busy during those sixteen years enriching the Muslim world with his presence by building schools and spearheading charity efforts, and he’s writing and performing music again.

However, Cat is still haunted by that fateful report in a now defunct newspaper, “… unfortunately the monstrous myth it created still survives.” (May 2003)

Cat Stevens, known as Yusaf Islam since 1989, in his own words says, “…The Life Of The Last Prophet (s) is mine! Rushdie’s book, by his own confession, is based on fiction - mine is based on facts! Therefore people are free; they now have a choice, so let them listen and see who they are more inclined to believe. That is all I wish to say on that matter.”

We must respect the perspective of others and follow rules, be responsible and discerning if we are to be truly free and liberated, from our own misconceptions, especially. More words of wisdom come to mind spoken by Don Miguel Ruiz in his book titled “The Four Agreements.” “Be impeccable with your word.” It’s as simple as that. Say what you mean and mean what you say, and please give it some thought before you say it, keeping things in the proper context, because first there was the word, and the word is God, no matter what book you get it from. Get on the Peace Train.

Stretch Mark Prevention Tips

Posted by admin on April 29, 2008 in World Of Templates

With all its inner workings, the human body is a complex system.
The good news about the way this system works is that it
basically functions without much intervention from its owner.
However, it does require nourishment to function properly. When
there is a problem it is often indicated externally. Just as the
case with stretch marks. While it is possible for you to develop
the condition despite taking precautions by following the steps
mentioned below to prevent stretch marks, you can limit your
risk significantly.

Stretch marks can result from a hormonal imbalance or as an
inherited condition. There is very little you can do to prevent
stretch marks that result from your genetic makeup. However,
stretch mark prevention is possible when the cause is linked to
a hormonal imbalance. The following are some easy tips for
stretch mark prevention.

Don’t gain or lose weight rapidly. If your body changes its
physical composition too quickly, all the processes may not
function properly. In relation to stretch marks, collagen and
elastin may not be produced efficiently. These elements are
essential for keeping your skin flexible and smooth.

Keep your body hydrated. You have undoubtedly heard it times
before, but there is never too much information about the
benefits of drinking water. Water helps to prevent stretch marks
by helping the body stay moisturized. There are constant debates
over the amount of water an individual should consume. The best
indicator is your urine. Urine that is close to colorless is an
indication that you are well hydrated.

Exercise. Daily exercise is just as important as staying
hydrated. The two work together to keep your body free of
toxins. Exercise also keeps your body well toned. Strength
training is a good method for toning, but a daily walk is all
that is necessary for good health.

Moisturize your skin. Applying a moisturizer helps to keep your
skin supple and smooth. You want to use products with natural
ingredients. Stretch Mark Prevention Oil is one such product.
Natural ingredients are generally safer and are tolerated by
most people. Pregnant women are susceptible to stretch marks and
a moisturizer with natural ingredients, such as Stretch Mark
Prevention Oil assures the mother that no harm will come to her
baby as a result of using the product.

When you take care of your body it will return the favor. As
long as you nourish your body and keep it healthy you should be
able to keep stretch marks at bay.

Flag Day: Will You Be Ready?

Posted by admin on April 28, 2008 in Uncategorized

Flag Day: Will You Be Ready?

Flag Day is on June 14th. Will you be ready to fly Old Glory?

Flag Day comes and you find that your neighbors have flags flying but you don’t. You wonder why you didn’t get a telescoping flagpole for your front lawn or a deluxe flagpole for your porch. Well, that’s why I’m giving you a head start this year.

Flag Etiquette

The flag is usually flown during daylight hours. It is hoisted briskly in the morning and more slowly in a reverent manner in the evening. The flag should be carefully folded at the end of the day.

You may be asked by a government agency to fly your flag at half staff when someone dies. Pull the flag to the top of the pole before lowering it to the half staff position. Also do the same when you retire the flag in the evening.

Folding the flag is easy. Fold the flag laterally AVOIDING the covering of the field of blue with the stripes. Now fold it the same way again still exposing the field of blue. Starting at the stripe end, make a triangular fold. Now repeat this until you have folded up through the field of blue and to the end of the flag. See this procedure at
http://www.ushistory.org/betsy/flagetiq.html.

When your flag is old and tattered, take it to a local Boy Scout troop. Have them burn the flag in their traditional ceremony. You may attend the ceremony if you like. During the life of the flag, it should have never hit the ground.

American Flag History

Two Americans are known in relationship to the flag. One is Betsy Ross. No one knows for sure that she made the first American flag. The myth was generated long after her death. However, she made some flags in colonial America.

Francis Scott Key referred to the Star-Spangled Banner in his poem during the War of 1812.

Oh, say can you see, by the dawn’s early light,
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight’s last gleaming?
Whose broad stripes and bright stars, through the perilous fight,
O’er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming?
And the rockets’ red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.
O say, does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

I mentioned in an earlier article that the National Anthem was put to music using an old English drinking song called the To Anacreon in Heaven. See the history of the flag at Fort McHenry at http://www.crwflags.com/fotw/flags/us-henry.html.

Ground mounts for flagpoles should be securely anchored according to the instructions that come with the flagpole. A sack or two of ready-mix concrete is usually sufficient for a 20-foot telescoping flagpole. I recommend a telescoping flagpole because it requires no ropes or lanyards that can tangle in the wind, etc.

Deck or dock mounts should be securely bolted to the deck or dock following the instructions that come with those mounts. Although a ground mount usually comes with a flagpole, dock and deck mounts are extra.

Lots of folks like to display their flag at sporting events, flea markets, or when camping. A wheel mount is good for this. You drive your car or trailer tire over the wheel mount and you have an anchored mount for your flag. You may find a carrying case useful to transport your flagpole to your event.

Telescoping flag poles usually will accommodate the American Flag and a second flag of your choice, such as a state or school flag.

Wall-mounted flags are usually of the 6-foot pole types that come with a flag. Mounting the flagpole to an outside wall is relatively simple. Just make sure you follow instructions. Don’t buy an inexpensive flagpole kit at your local store. Get one that will last.

You can see flagpoles and mounts of the above types at http://www.aaaflagpoles.com.

Let’s fly Old Glory this next Flag Day!

Bridal Registry

Posted by admin on in The Relationships Way

Bridal registries are services offered by department stores to allow engaged couples to choose the gifts they will receive at their wedding. Couples can draft a list of items that they would like to receive from what is offered at the store. This list is provided to wedding guests so that the desired number of each gift is ordered or purchased and the guests can avoid duplication. Some methods allow several participating stores to provide the list to guests.

When a guest purchases a gift, the department store’s list is restructured and the article is removed from the list of preferred items. This prevents a single gift from being unintentionally bought by several people. A bridal registry is effective both for the couple to be married and for guests who no longer need to be apprehensive over what to buy.

Department stores can be very efficient and offer an exceedingly individual experience for the bride, groom and registry buyers. Bridal registries give free of charge consultations in person, over the phone or via Internet to brides and grooms. This helps them decide on the items they want and select items according to taste and home decor planning needs.

Services may include importing items directly from the manufacturer, offering considerable cost savings for couples and visitors. If another guest has previously purchased an item, stores provide options of issuing a gift certificate or the ability to notify the guest and offer counseling in selecting a new item.

The concept of a bridal registry is at times, looked upon as offensive, predominantly by guests of older generations. It is looked upon as asking for gifts and is seen as walking all over traditional gift buying habits. Detractors also say that the element of surprise is lost and it turns gift buying into a competition, as the couple knows prices of the presents received. The use of bridal registries has increased, nonetheless, as has the controversial practice of couples asking guests to give them money instead of gifts.

In spite of these issues, bridal registries have become popular amongst modern couples, as they are practical in nature and save time spent returning unwanted gifts.

Listening for Your Children’s Love

Posted by admin on in Kids Stuff

You are telling me that in this age of instant communication, instant gratification, constant stimulation, that something as quiet as listening can impact your frazzled family?

Absolutely!

I am deeply indebted to my early graduate school instructors and to Tony Kubicki, who was my mentor in the domestic violence field, for their patience in teaching me the value of listening.

It was Tony who actually cemented my knowledge of listening with his model, which he taught to men who were court ordered to his Beyond Abuse program.

But first, my instructors at Illinois State University had to confront my old confrontational style of conversation, and what I thought was deeply empathic listening. My style of reflective listening was much more accusatory than it was empathic. Luckily for me, I caught on before too much academic damage resulted.

I am also indebted to author Warren Farrell, whose book “Why Men are the Way They Are” includes a model for listening effectively when the other party is very upset.

The Discreet Skills.

Tony’s model was a little simpler than Mr. Farrells.
Tony said to repeat your friend’s or your wife’s or your child’s words, silently, to yourself as they speak.

When it is your turn, you first repeat back to the other person what you heard them say, with some acknowledgement of their feelings, ending with a question along the lines of, “Did I get that right?”

If the answer is, “Yes, you got that right”, then you can speak.

If the answer to your question of accuracy is. “No”, then you would ask them to repeat their information for you so you could “get on the same page with them.” (Technically, this process could go on indefinitely, but usually doesn’t.)

The idea behind repeating their words to myself is to stop the oh so human habit of waiting for them to take a breath so I can get my accusation in style of communication.

Tony called using those listening skills “Giving the gift of Attention.”

I do not know how many times I have been confronted by someone, like my wife, or children, who are very upset, and I can watch them calm down as they begin to trust that I will listen to them.

Listening is the Solution?

It would appear then that the actual act of listening is sometimes the solution sought after by our significant others.
I give attention first, unless my wife or children are actually saying, “How do I do That…?” kind of questions.

My wife is an incredibly bright woman who has run her life incredibly well without too many solutions from me, the guy who is hardwired and trained to provide solutions.

However, every day we share some conversation about feelings. Every day, she may seek closeness and comfort in the form of a conversation about her feelings in regard to an issue. If I remember the “Gift of Attention”, and provide it, I get huge rewards.

Children are to be Seen and not Heard!

I am intensely curious about how my children are growing inside. I want them to feel confident and to act confidently.
So I think that part of my responsibilities as a Frazzled Father is to talk with them.

My son has already begun the process of not sharing his feelings without some prompting, but I keep after him, and so we violate that ancient family value about children not talking.

I encourage him to find words for his feelings, and I am delighted when he uses them in his daily vocabulary.

I am working very hard to be that John Gottman style of “Emotional Coach.”

Lots of our play has to do with rough housing. I did not get to do much of that with my Dad, and I am amazed at how he loves to wrestle with me. Seems like we could wrestle forever.

During our rough housing is when I can teach him some words about disgust and contempt. I can say to him that I want more mischief in our communication, rather than the contempt I sometimes get. And you know what?

He will eventually find words that serve him, and are respectful to me.

I think part of what he is trying out with me is how to be aggressive, strong, masculine, (such energy) and on the play ground, where there are older kids, he sees contempt and aggression, so he brings it home to try on me.

Here is where listening pays off with my boy. If I respond to the expression or tone of voice which indicates contempt, with contempt, I will very quickly alienate my son, if not make him fear me. (I need to handle my emotions, and parent from my values, and model for him a powerful masculinity which respects rather than disrepects. Remember that 1/18th second that it takes for me to convert love to violence?)

When my little daughter talks to me, she is usually asking for food or attention. She likes me to chase her across the room, giggling and chortling, as I chug along behind her. So much delight.

She will even allow me to prompt her in games of interaction. If I am laying on the couch, she will crawl all over me, like a cub in a lion pride.

Listening to her is easy at this point.

However, just because she has no words yet does not mean that I get a pass on listening.

Her brain is actually being shaped at an incredibly rapid pace by the quality of social interactions with her family and care givers.

It is very, very important to her sense of safety and attachment, which will impact the quality of her relationships all the rest of her life, that her mom and I look at her as we interact and that we let her see our love and admiration.

We will communicate that through our eyes and tone of voice at this point, and we need to match her as we change diapers or get her milk, or bathe her.

So giving the gift of attention is very important at every stage of life.

Diet Food Doesn’t Have To Be Boring!

Posted by admin on in Food Feed

Not too long ago, my mother and I were talking about food and diets. “Your grandmother used to feed you pasta five nights a week,” my mother insisted.

“She did not!” I exclaimed, stung. After all, I remembered my grandmother as a wonderfully varied cook who could make anything taste wonderful. She served all sorts of meals, not just pasta! There was spaghetti, of course - she was Italian, after all. But she also made Ziti with vegetables. And Linguine. And tuna casserole with. ..elbow macaroni. By the time I’d finished naming off a typical week’s worth of menus, I had to concede my mother’s point - but I made mine as well. “But… it didn’t FEEL like we were eating pasta every night!”

There’s a point to this story, I promise, and here it comes:

One of the biggest reasons that people slip off their diets and eating plans is BOREDOM.

It’s very easy to look at the foods allowed on your diet and see it as restrictive and boring. Chicken four nights a week. Fish three times a week. Green leafy vegetables till they’re coming out of your ears. Who wouldn’t get bored?

The answer is - anyone with a good set of cookbooks and a healthy imagination. Perk up your cabinet with spices and fill your refrigerator with fresh fruits and vegetables, then look for novel ways to combine them.

Here are a handful of tips for non-boring, healthy, low-cal eating

1. Spice it up!

Spices are one of the quickest ways out of the diet doldrums. Rosemary and fennel with chicken, mint rubbed into pork, pepper and lemon mint on fresh fish - the ‘blander’ the food, the higher the effect of the spices.

2. Dress it up.

Fruit vinaigrette dressings make wonderful marinades for meats and dressings for warm or cold vegetables. Try broccoli drizzled with raspberry vinaigrette or cabbage spiced up with apple vinegar and pepper.

2. Herb-infused olive oils - tarragon, ginger, fennel and more.

3. My brother the chef gave me a set of three oils for Christmas one year and it completely changed the way I’ll cook forever!

4. Low sodium soy sauce is a great way to flavor up just about anything.

5. Fruit

The bitterness of dark leafy greens like spinach were practically designed to be eaten with mandarin oranges, raspberries or chunks of pineapple.

Still need some help? Here is a list of the absolute best cookbooks on the market to help you fight those diet boredom blues!

Bra Frustration

Posted by admin on in Togas

I remember the times I would go shopping for Bras (especially during a sale) and when I got to the store, they either didn’t have my size or the clerk would say, ” sorry but we just sold out”. Yeah sure.

And please don’t mention Lingerie and Girdles!

Mine you, I could have went for the stuff in the back on the cheap isle, but why pay for something that will make you miserable and uncomfortable because of poor quality. Wash them a few times and what do you have…Wounds from the wire bursting out of the seams. Sure, I would save a buck or two, but I couldn’t see myself continuing to be uncomfortable all day due to something I hadn’t come to buy in the first place.

I decided that enough was enough and I was going to go online and find what I was looking for.

With gas prices being as high as they are, running all over town was now out of the question. I figured I could sit back in front of my computer, have a cup of coffee and relax a little.

There were three things that I need to do before I started my online journey. The first was to measure my full bust, under my bust and upper bust. These measurements also apply if you enjoy driving all over town.

Yes I said measure! It only takes a few minutes and you’ll be confident that you have your correct size in the event your girly figure has changed a little.

I went online and found the quality, price and most important… correct fit I was searching for.

Ladies, never settle for less. Take your measurements and find the price, quality and comfort you desire online.

Have a cup of coffee, tea or whatever and enjoy the Bra delights you can find on the Internet.
