Complaining at the Table

Posted by admin on July 21, 2010 in Best Gambling, Enjoyment, Games

If you’ve ever sat down in a casino or card room or even a friend’s living room to play poker games, whether it be Texas Hold Em online poker games or some other variant, undoubtedly you’ve sat at a table with a player that complains about every hand he loses. This is an unchanging truth about poker. Now I get a poker online player getting upset and letting off a little steam when he is the victim of a bad beat. It’s like a baseball manager arguing with the umpire after a bad call. You get up, curse a little bit and sit back down. I do not, however, condone yelling or spewing vitriol at the opponent who was the beneficiary of the bad beat. The guy got lucky so what? This is poker, which is very much a game of luck, and a game of skill. And even worse are the people who complain after every little thing. Like even if they are in a hand and are slight favorites, like 52-48, and lose and complain it was a “bad beat.” Further, if you are sitting at a very low-limit table you have no right to complain. I was playing a casual $1-$2 limit Hold Em game at an Atlantic City casino when another player got mad at me because I kept calling him with crap cards, and got lucky on the turn and river and made a straight and beat him. Well you know what? If you’re gonna play the lowest limit poker game, you can’t get made when people call you down to the river. Grow some stones and play $5-$10 limit and it won’t happen. In short, we all love this game of poker, so let’s all try to be civil to each other at the table and make it an enjoyable experience.

Tom and Jerry Cartoons

Posted by admin on May 25, 2010 in Diversions + Entertainment, Enjoyment, Laughs

This is a post dedicated to Mr. Hanna and Barbera for making the great and fabulous cartoon Tom and Jerry. The non-stop action is so much fun for kids to watch. We are going on over fifty years of this being available for everyone to watch. I am now in my forties and I find myself watching this cartoon in the morning when I first wake up and getting ready for my lumbar spine treatment for my bulged disc. When I watch it my mind gets off of the pain and into a good spot, it reminds me of when I was in third grade waiting for the bus and just laughing so hard.

The character Butch is my favorite after Tom because is such a rival to Tom. He can charm the character Toodles and it just really gets to him, and this makes for a really funny show. Not all shows have been able to hold popularity for this long and because of the uniqueness and quality of storylines this is a cartoon of legends. This is truly a remarkable piece of work in the television world. The animation is not all that good compared to today’s standards, but it is good enough to lead the way into what we have available today.

Washing the Deck

Posted by admin on May 7, 2010 in Best Gambling, Enjoyment, Games

A thorough shuffle of a standard deck of poker cards has been shown to be totally randomized from eight proper shuffles. A good dealer can make this happen every time, with complete redistribution of the deck. In the course of live play, however, even the best dealers may slip from the ideal shuffle and therefore cause certain packets or pairs of cards to stay together. It’s not necessarily something other poker players are tracking, but it still can affect a game. In order to rectify this occasional slur of chance, a good practice for a deal who does not have access to an electronic shuffler is to wash the deck. To wash the deck, one will spread the cards on the table as if stirring them in a pot, and then manually shuffle the cards horizontally on the table, rubbing them around in a random rush. It doesn’t take long to mix the cards up in true random, without the occasionally sticking cards that may stay together from poker hand to poker hand. Doing this every half hour or hour can be a good way to keep the game fully normalized in relation to the cards. It also gives the players a good feeling that the deck is clean and refreshed for every hand.

Dead Money

Posted by admin on April 13, 2010 in Best Gambling, Enjoyment, Games

Don’t leave money on the online poker table. You know those hands where nobody wants to bet at all-everybody just limps in, then checks around after the flop, turn and river, then some clown with King high or a pair of 2’s wins the hand? Every time I fold pre-flop and that happens, I feel sick to my stomach. I’m not going to lie-it happens when I’m in the hand, as well-I’ll draw dead after the flop and everyone checks to me, but I just tap the table and hope I pair something on the turn. Then someone finally makes a small bet, and the rest of us can’t wait to fold. Basically, the chips in the middle of the online poker table are abandoned, and just waiting for someone to make a bet and pick them up.

If the table checks around to you and you don’t smell a trap, you can usually buy it up for a small bet. Most of the time, your online poker opponents will be happy to be out of that hand anyway. One quick note, though-a lot of players won’t have a problem calling a minimum bet, so if you’re going to make a play, it’d be safer to bet maybe three or four times the minimum.

Raise the Junk

Posted by admin on March 19, 2010 in Best Gambling, Enjoyment, Games

Most online poker players with high ranking cards will call or raise the blinds. When cards come out to match their face or Ace, most likely they’re holding the highest pair. However, sometimes the flop just brings junk - all low ranked non-suited, unconnected cards. This situation presents an opportunity to steal the poker onlineN pot when you are holding high cards even though they did not hit the flop. If you raised pre-flop, you are in good position to continuation bet as though you already are holding a high ranking pair. From late position with no bets ahead of you, there is the chance to steal with a bet. Having late position implies a broader range of starting cards, so your opponents may believe the raggy flop connected with a speculative hand in late position. Even if you get called, a high poker card to match your pocket might come out on the turn. However, after your attempt to steal, you should probably tighten up and fold to any raise or fourth street bet ahead of you. Don’t risk a lot of chips by betting at these flops. If you do make it to showdown and lose, then keep in mind you have created a bluffing image that you may be able to leverage later with a monster hand.

Loose Table

Posted by admin on January 22, 2010 in Best Gambling, Enjoyment, Games

I was at a poker tournament last weekend, and I was placed at a online poker table of really loose/aggressive players, and I was getting dealt a lot of crap. My opponents seemed to be getting crap as well, but they were playing their crap, and somehow they kept winning with their crap. It got pretty frustrating, and I was wondering how these players were turning such garbage into winning hands. I hated folding hand after hand, watching my chip stack slowly deplete from the blinds and watching these other guys win with hands that I wouldn’t blow my nose with. Luckily, my patience paid off. My poker online opponents kept trying to make things happen with their crap cars, and to my eternal satisfaction, it didn’t last very long. After a while, my luck began to change, and I finally got some playable cards. Knowing that they were playing loosely, I fattened up the pot before the flops, and since I was playing high percentage hands, I would normally draw a winning hand. I starting winning back the chips I lost to the blinds and then some. My opponents, however, kept trying to win with their usually mediocre hands, and eventually enough of them got knocked out to put me at the final table.

Poker Tournament as a Marathon

Posted by admin on January 13, 2010 in Best Gambling, Enjoyment, Games

The major difference between a poker online cash game and a tournament is that in cash games you can come and go, die and rise again, whereas with online poker it is a longer picture. You can only win if you survive. Thus, making rash decisions early and putting your chips at risk in spots where you could have dodged a bullet is key to making it deep into a large field tournament. The risk should be taken more often when you know where you are.

Players like Dan Harrington and Mike Matusow see the poker tournament field as a portal of opportunity. You look for your spots, you pick players off when they are bluffing, and you stand hard when you know where you are. Making marginal plays might work out well in cash games, where if you are wrong you are wrong, and life begins again. But in the tournament first and foremost you must protect your life.

You see a lot of all in players and reckless pushing in poker tournament broadcasts these days, but it is the slow long strokes that more regularly maintain stride. You can go for broke and become chip leader, but often those early day chip leader aren’t the ones who are still on top when the late days and end runs come to roost. Remember this when you sign up for a tournament at a casino online.

Chasing and Finding Your Outs

Posted by admin on December 21, 2009 in Best Gambling, Enjoyment, Games

If you’re going to chase a poker online hand, make it a bargain poker online hand-if you have lots of outs, you’ll actually be chasing several poker hands that you’re chasing with every bet that you place. If you are banking on a flush making your hand, you’re out of luck if that Heart doesn’t come, but if you’re looking for a flush, or high pair, or a card to make your open-ended straight, you’re a lot more likely to make at least one of those hands. The more outs that you have, the better the odds that you’ll walk away with a few chips. I was at a table one night with King-Jack of Clubs in front of me, when I was faced with an all-in bet. The table was showing 10 of Clubs, Queen of Hearts, and 2 of Clubs. I didn’t even have a pair yet, but I had a ton of outs. With my flush draw, I had nine Clubs in the deck that would have made my flush, the open-ended straight draw added eight more cards (four Aces and four 9’s) that would have made my straight, and at the very least, I might have drawn one of three other Kings that would have given me high pair. That made twenty cards that could have given me a winning hand and I had two chances to get them. I called, and a King on the river made my hand. If you’re chasing a hand, make sure that you’ve got plenty of options to draw from.
