I was at a poker tournament last weekend, and I was placed at a online poker table of really loose/aggressive players, and I was getting dealt a lot of crap. My opponents seemed to be getting crap as well, but they were playing their crap, and somehow they kept winning with their crap. It got pretty frustrating, and I was wondering how these players were turning such garbage into winning hands. I hated folding hand after hand, watching my chip stack slowly deplete from the blinds and watching these other guys win with hands that I wouldn’t blow my nose with. Luckily, my patience paid off. My poker online opponents kept trying to make things happen with their crap cars, and to my eternal satisfaction, it didn’t last very long. After a while, my luck began to change, and I finally got some playable cards. Knowing that they were playing loosely, I fattened up the pot before the flops, and since I was playing high percentage hands, I would normally draw a winning hand. I starting winning back the chips I lost to the blinds and then some. My opponents, however, kept trying to win with their usually mediocre hands, and eventually enough of them got knocked out to put me at the final table.
The major difference between a poker online cash game and a tournament is that in cash games you can come and go, die and rise again, whereas with online poker it is a longer picture. You can only win if you survive. Thus, making rash decisions early and putting your chips at risk in spots where you could have dodged a bullet is key to making it deep into a large field tournament. The risk should be taken more often when you know where you are.
Players like Dan Harrington and Mike Matusow see the poker tournament field as a portal of opportunity. You look for your spots, you pick players off when they are bluffing, and you stand hard when you know where you are. Making marginal plays might work out well in cash games, where if you are wrong you are wrong, and life begins again. But in the tournament first and foremost you must protect your life.
You see a lot of all in players and reckless pushing in poker tournament broadcasts these days, but it is the slow long strokes that more regularly maintain stride. You can go for broke and become chip leader, but often those early day chip leader aren’t the ones who are still on top when the late days and end runs come to roost. Remember this when you sign up for a tournament at a casino online.
If you’re going to chase a poker online hand, make it a bargain poker online hand-if you have lots of outs, you’ll actually be chasing several poker hands that you’re chasing with every bet that you place. If you are banking on a flush making your hand, you’re out of luck if that Heart doesn’t come, but if you’re looking for a flush, or high pair, or a card to make your open-ended straight, you’re a lot more likely to make at least one of those hands. The more outs that you have, the better the odds that you’ll walk away with a few chips. I was at a table one night with King-Jack of Clubs in front of me, when I was faced with an all-in bet. The table was showing 10 of Clubs, Queen of Hearts, and 2 of Clubs. I didn’t even have a pair yet, but I had a ton of outs. With my flush draw, I had nine Clubs in the deck that would have made my flush, the open-ended straight draw added eight more cards (four Aces and four 9’s) that would have made my straight, and at the very least, I might have drawn one of three other Kings that would have given me high pair. That made twenty cards that could have given me a winning hand and I had two chances to get them. I called, and a King on the river made my hand. If you’re chasing a hand, make sure that you’ve got plenty of options to draw from.
You know what? Don’t go all in on the first hand of a poker tournament. Go ahead-argue with me, because you’re wrong. This weekend, I was playing in a large No-Limit Hold ‘Em tournament that I had been looking forward to all week. I was going to be playing against a new set of players that I hadn’t met but whose reputations I had heard about, and I was eager to be in a game with these guys.
That strategy was short-lived, as my excitement got the better of me. On the first hand, I turned over my cards and saw a King of Hearts and a Ten of Clubs. Against my better judgement, I bet into the pot and got a few callers, The flop was 3-9-Q of clubs, and with everyone else at the table checking to me, I raised again, and after a low club on the turn, big blind went all in. Since it was the first hand of the game we had the same amount of chips, and calling him would put me all in as well. Putting him on a small flush, I called and watched him turn over a King of clubs, giving him one of the three cards that could beat my hand, and end my online poker tournament.
Unless you have the absolute nuts and no hand can possibly beat yours, trust me-it’s not worth it to risk your entire tournament on the first hand at a casino.
href=”http://www.everestpoker.com/nl/”>online poker players, and for good reasonplaying them can end up having you make hands that your opponents would never put you on, and in the long run make you a lot of money at the casino. Popular players like Daniel Negreanu and Gus Hansen make playing these hands look like child’s play too, though in reality the suited connector can be a leak in a poker player’s game if they aren’t willing to make the right plays with them.
Obviously when you play connectors you are hoping to flop a monster hand. Flopping a straight with 5-7 is a great feeling and will often end up helping you take down what can be a large pot. But what about when you don’t flop the nuts? What about when you flop middle pair? Are you the kind of player that can move in with middle pair when you have reasonable doubt that it beats your opponent’s ace king?
Too often, players who aren’t willing to put their money on the line without a big hand will get over-involved in speculation. More timid players, wanting to be like the more aggressive online stars, are often suited to do better playing their big cards and their position rather than trying to make magic out of nothingthough teaching yourself to be more active from the non-nuts positions: that is where the true test of a poker player arises. Suited connectors have become very popular among regular card players and
