Standing out at a Job Faire can make a difference in your job hunting. Job Fairs are starting to pick up, and a major job search company is running some nice ones, called Targeted Job Fairs. At a SF Bay Area Career Faire in January, 10 companies as showing up, and a major job search company has 82 career fairs scheduled for 2010 across the States.
How do you stand out at a Career Fair? The rivalry can be sizeable, but you can help yourself jump out from the herd with early homework. At AA-Careers, we have a simplified step-by-step process to prepare. Plan to go? Here’s how to prepare:
First, investigate the organizations that are going and pick your objectives. Use the internet to research the companies that are there beforehand. Go to their sites and see if they have their jobs posted. Pick a tenable number to go after, and get ready to spend about an hour researching each one. It’s hard to do more than eight in a day, and three to five is a much more reasonable target. For each hiring organization, you want to know: key product lines, recent news, and executive names. Try to see if you know anyone at the target companies. You should end up with a page or two of research for each company/job.
Second, if there are job postings on the web, read them to see what the organization is looking for. Create a mapping of your accomplishments and skills to the prerequisites of the job. Make the terminology match. If the hiring company calls customers "clients", your resume should do the same thing. The accomplishments should be written in the style of the hiring organization.
Third, create a ‘short sales pitch’ for each likely company/position combination. Write down a ninety second ‘thumbnail’ that you can repeat verbally showing why you are a key prospect for that job. You’ll use this in your resume and when you meet the team from the company at the job booth.
Fourth, modify your resume for each job type. The objective on your resume should exactly match the position you’re want. The executive summary should be a written form of your “mini sales pitch” for the job. Then choose the achievements and skills that most clearly match the job prerequisites. Especially at a Job Faire, the purpose of your resume is a sales tool for you – to get you on-site job interviews. It should be quick to see that you’re a fit based on your resume.
Fifth, practice your ‘mini-sales-pitch’. Collect your research and the resume for each opportunity - bring a couple of copies for each – and put each in a understandably tagged folder. Keep them in a light briefcase or folio.
Finally, dress and prepare as if you’re doing on-site interviews. Dress well and be fittingly groomed. Avoid strong cologne or perfume…use any cologne or fragrance meagerly, if at all.
Remember to smile, and good hunting!
The British Government has publicly announced its decision to impose a new tax on those landline phones that are not used by customers to make calls. The charge has been levied to earn more revenues for providing cheap broadband to rural areas. The plan means a 50p tax per month and VAT on all lines irrespective of use.
The Treasury has made it clear that all local loops comprising of copper pair loops, co-axial cable and fibre connection loops will also be liable to pay the new charge. Additionally, customers will be billed on every phone separately if they have more than one line.
The duty, which would be effective from October 2010 if the Labour party is voted back to power, will see even lines used only for internet purposes being taxed.
The Government consultation has ruled out the possibility of anyone being left out of the new tax regime, pointing out that even users who do not use the phone for making calls and use voice over internet protocol (VOIP) services like Skype will have to pay for having a landline.
The Treasury has also laid out various methods for the efficient collection of the levy. It said in a statement that tax could be added to the rental paid for the line, included in the customer’s overall package cost, or billed like a separate item.
The plan is expected to generate revenues amounting to nearly £175 million annually, which will aid in the expansion of broadband to 90 percent of the
However, the Conservative party is largely unhappy with the government’s plan. It has said that the decision was uncalled for, and it has promised to scrap the scheme if the general elections of 2010 give it a government-forming majority in the parliament.

Well in aviation the toys for pilots are getting a lot better, for instance the GPS-PDAs with sectional charts on them. Also lots of other data like the J-Aide and Jeppeson airport contacts once you arrive. All this makes flying easier, less complicated and more enjoyable. AvMap EKP-III C

and even more cool are the ones with all the bells and whistles; Such as loading it with an International Data Base. Hell now the CIA can have all the civilian data along with their intelligence information. Of course this newest Industry finds itself with many new players as pilots are generally not having a problem affording new toys and it saves all those large flight bags and Knee Boards and clips. You can still buy the clipboards and I have one when I drive the Blitz Mobile mobile command center across the country hunting for the latest technologies it has maps and important numbers to do business from the highway. Many truck drivers and railroad conductors use such boards and in the NAVY Pilots use them and even probably torpedo bombers did too; remember George Bush Senior flew a torpedo bomber?
Back to our GPS Toys and PDA devices; Another one of the more unique ones is the EnFlight Text Weather Devise which you can google to get all the specs, definitely worth a look see. All of these devises also allow for National Security so no more private pilots in C-182s fly into restricted areas;
http://www.faa.gov/NTAP/SPECIALNOTAMS/Spec…s_graphics_.htm .
These companies are also careful whom they send these devises to, for obvious reasons. Just think you could be flying your own private plane with a little PDA devise and go have a blast with your newfound freedom. Another cool devise and one of my favorites is the Pocket test which you can look up on Google. This is a cool devise to help you from getting lost and it has just about too many features to list, too bad it was not Windows CE based, I just cannot trust the longevity of Palm in the market place and hope our military is not so stupid to buy into there hype for military versions. One thing going for it is its size. Very small.
We did like the MapTech unit also because we can use it on a laptop, Handheld GPS unit of PDA GPS unit, with terrain CAD capabilities. This unit has many other purposes for General Civil Engineering, Forestry, Mobile Car Washing scheduling and routing, Aviation, Hiking, Fishing, Diving, Trucking, you name it. It also has features from NOAA for weather; I would recommend this as the best all-purpose unit I have thus yet found. It also works with ESRI software. So we like this for its versatility across industries. Good for us too with the blitz mobile to take the route with the least amount of hills for fuel consumption conservation and wear and tear on a 300,000-mile truck. Another of the best units we looked at was the
http://www.teletype.com/pages/tracking.html
which can be used like a Top Secret “Bloodhound Unit” and we can use this for car wash truck tracking, can be used for just about any real use to help you find your self or units. This is a way we can covertly track our units so employees do not screw off and kill profits and lie about where they were and how long they were there. Also in our survey we looked at the SatellinkTech units and found a lot of other cool features there;
http://www.satellinktech.com/product/merlin_air_main.htm .
This is a great tool, like the other units is does provide real time data such as; Airport observations and forecasts (text), Area forecasts (text), Upper wind forecasts (text), Pilot reports (text and onboard processed graphics), Icing and Turbulence forecasts (graphical), Status of restricted, prohibited, and military training airspace (text and onboard processed graphics), Location of other aircraft on instrument flight plans (onboard processed graphics), FAA alerts and advisories, Aircraft Situational Display.
What is also of interest is how much all these companies work together so that they can provide all the same data to all their customers. This does not mean one is not better than the other. For our purposes we chose the Tele Type unit with all the features, which we may implement in the future. I hope this review of products has assisted you in learning more about the technology. Many of these PDA technologies will be available for nearly any business small or large.

The telecom industry is experiencing unprecedented growth in the last few years and this growth pattern is to sustain itself in the near future, according to trade pundits. The figures available for 2008 put the number of mobile broadband users to 186 million, and this figure is projected to touch six million by the end of this year.
With this pattern of growth, network congestion is bound to happen. The service providers are already facing the problem of customer dissatisfaction due to decrease in the quality of service because of congestion during peak usage times. Mobile broadband users are complaining of slow download speeds.
Research conducted by network analyst Informa Telecoms and Media has suggested the use of network optimisation to overcome the problem of congestion. The company conducted a comparative study by testing the file size and download speeds of various service providers in relation to certain popular sites like Amazon and Facebook.
The tests showed that in case of service providers like T-mobile , BT and Vodafone who were already using network optimisation, the download speed was far better when compared to that of non- users.
With the ever-increasing demand on the already overburdened broadband network, it is important to note that network optimisation significantly improves the quality of service, but this is not a long-term solution to the problem.

In June this year, Virgin Media and programme partner Universal Music had announced a soon-to-be launched unlimited scheme for music downloads. The scheme, once implemented, was to allow subscribers to download any number of tracks as they pleased, at the cost of 2-3 albums per month.
Even as late as last month, Virgin Media representatives had confirmed that the unlimited download plan would be launched this Christmas. However, the scheme now seems to have been altered by the company. The modifications may disappoint the subscribers, as Virgin has now opted to remove the unlimited option from its subscription programme. The final outline of the service may be 40 Mp3 downloads for £15 payable monthly. This was mentioned in a report which appeared online on The Register.
Virgin Media is collaborating with Universal Music to offer this service, and this has not gone down too well with other music industry biggies like EMI and Sony. It is believed that lack of support from both may have been a significant factor in the withdrawal of the original plan. Unlimited streaming of music tracks will however still be available from Virgin. Similar plans revealed by BSkyB with regard to music downloads have not materialised yet.
Take a look at all the plans offered by Virgin Broadband at Broadband Genie; their comparative table of
There is an easy test that I like to use when evaluating a GPS, or any type of electronic device. I call it the user manual test. When I pick up a new GPS for the first time, I see how easily I can operate the GPS with common sense alone and without using the manual. Criteria for a good GPS is firmly based on how easily I can operate the menu options and pick up the functions. This is an aspect that some people overlook yet it is perhaps the single most important part of a GPS.
The first reason that user friendly functions and menus are so important is that the vast majority of people who buy GPS units are seasonal or occasional users. They are not out there 5 days a week, honing their skills and keeping the idiosyncrasies of their GPS at the forefront of their mind! Consequently, most users want to be able to pick the damn thing up and be able to get their hands on accurate information that can make the difference between getting lost, or even a fatal ending to an outdoor adventure.
The second reason that GPS units need to be easy to use is that they are often used by groups such as hunters, fishermen and hikers. This makes it quite likely that some members of the group will not be experienced with your particular model or brand of GPS. In these kinds of circumstances it is doubtful that anyone will want to sit down and read a user manual, that is if you still know where it is! So do yourself a favor and get a GPS that makes sense to you without having to go to the book, if for nothing else that from a safety point of view.
The third reason it that if you are willing to spend a couple of bucks on your GPS and choose a top brand such as Magellan or Garmin you don’t need to worry too much about what functions are included. The level of competition between these two companies is so high that neither is willing to put sub-standard products into the marketplace. At http://www.thegpscentre.com you can see reviews of GPS units and see how close these brand really are in both quality and price. What will make the difference will be the users ability to take advantage of the functions.
Remember, there is no point having a GPS with several navigation screens, thousands of automatic way-points if you can’t work out how to use them with ease. Happy trails and safe navigating to you all.

When it comes to providing 2Mb broadband connectivity for every user across Britain, the rural areas shouldn’t be left behind, according to a new report ‘Mind the Gap - Digital England, a rural perspective’, published by the Commission for Rural Communities.
The report says that government should have a constructive plan in place to extend broadband facility to communities residing in rural areas. The report recommends supporting the 40 community-based broadband schemes spread across the
The CRC also warns that the hubbub created by the government promising 2 Mb connection in 36 months may force the public to believe 2 Mb to be the ultimate digital experience, when the actual targets should be much more ambitious than that. The cities are moving forward with super fast broadband connections, but for rural areas even 2Mb is a dream right now.
Meanwhile, the proposed imposition of the ‘broadband tax‘an idea suggested by the Digital Britain Reporthas been taken with a pinch of salt by many organizations. One uncomfortable question that the government finds itself facing from the CRC report is whether the levy will indeed generate enough revenue for the government to invest in its grandiose plan of restructuring broadband network across the
You’ve probably heard the story of a young man who designed
a new computer operating system, and was turned down by IBM
for the first rights. That would be Bill Gates, of course.
And did you know that when Marconi, the inventor of Radio,
offered the rights to that new technology to the Italian
Government in 1894, they turned him down? You see, the new
device was only capable of sending a signal a short distance
at that time, and was eclipsed by the more popular
telephone. No one though it would amount to anything.
Of course today, Microsoft is, well, Microsoft. And Wireless
Radio technology has spawned everything from Television to
Cellular phones, and is still changing the way we
communicate and do business over 100 years later.
These are examples of Disruptive Technologies. Wikipedia
defines disruptive technologies as:
“A disruptive technology is a new technological innovation,
product, or service that eventually overturns the existing
dominant technology in the market, despite the fact that the
disruptive technology is both radically different from the
leading technology and that it often initially performs
worse than the leading technology according to existing
measures of performance. A disruptive technology comes to
dominate an existing market by either filling a role in a
new market that the older technology could not fill (as more
expensive, lower capacity but smaller-sized hard disks did
for newly developed notebook computers in the 1980s) or by
successively moving up-market through performance
improvements until finally displacing the market incumbents
(as digital photography has come to replace film
photography)”.
A thing to note is that disruptive technologies are not
disruptive to customers, and often take a long time before
they are significantly disruptive to other service providers
or manufacturers, so they are often difficult to recognize.
Indeed, as studies have shown, it is quite common for
incumbent companies to ignore disruptive technologies, since
they often compare badly to existing approaches, and the
initial markets for a disruptive technology are often very
small compared to the main existing market for the incumbent
technology.
Even if a disruptive technology is recognized, existing
businesses are often reluctant to take advantage of it,
since it would involve competing with their existing (and
more profitable) technological approach.
This situation exists today with VOIP Communications
Technology. VOIP stands for Voice over Internet Protocol,
and is rapidly overtaking the traditional Voice Market.
Several years ago, when most Internet Connections were Dial-
Up, this technology didn’t stand a chance against
established phone services. However, with the Worldwide
proliferation today of High-Speed wired and wireless
networks (note: another use of Radio technology), this
obstacle is being rapidly eroded.

Confused about VOIP? Join the crowd. It’s not as difficult as it sounds and we are going to make VOIP simple for the average person.
VOIP simply means Voice Over Internet Protocol. Now you don’t need to know anything about the protocol so basically it is using the Internet to make phone calls.
All you need is a high speed internet connection to make a VOIP call. There are many companies that offer VOIP service and offer the telephone with it. Many will even set it up for you. Even local cable companies are offering to set you up. Once it is set up, you don’t need to worry about anything. You can simply make telephone calls just like normal. Now you will be making calls through an internet company and not your phone company.
Why should I use VOIP and are there any disadvantages?
Advantages
The main reason most will want to use it is to lower their phone bills. You will normally pay a flat fee and you will get long distance to the US and Canada with it at no extra charge.
You can keep you phone number that you have now.
No matter where you move you can take your phone number with you even if you move to a different area code. My daughter moved to Bermuda and she kept her home phone number.
When you move and your phone moves with you there are no extra setup charges as there is with your local phone
If you are travelling you can set it up to use your laptop or wireless connection, as long as it is high speed. Most hotels these days accomodate this.
No longer will you have to pay for extra features. With VOIP service providers these usually come as standard. Features such as:
1. Caller ID
2. Call Waiting
3. Call Transfer
4. Repeat Dialling
5. Return Call
6. Three-Way Dialling
Advanced call filtering features. These features allow you to decide how calls to a specific number are handled by using caller ID information. They allow you to:
1. Forward the call to a particular number
2. Send the call directly to voicemail
3. Give the caller a busy signal
4. Play a “not-in-service” message
Disadvantages
Sometimes the quality is not as good as phone lines. It’s close and will continue to get better. I suspect that within a year you will not be able to tell the difference.
Set up can be very challenging. If you are not a techie, there is always someone you can hire to do it for you. With the financial savings you will get from it, it’s worth it to pay someone if you are at all squimish about it.
It does not work well with fax machines and alarm systems. It works and in short time this will also improve.
If your internet access goes down then your phone will also go down. For most with high speed access this rarely happens.
If the power goes off the phone will not work. For most of us, this is also a rare occurrance. You can get backup batteries to resolve this issue if you are in a rural area and it happens often.
Currently the government does not apply taxes to the service. If that changes VOIP may not be price effective anymore.
VOIP is the future and more and more people are coming online with it every day. This may also effect a lowering of the cost in time.
That is it in a nutshell. It’s not nearly as scary as you thought.
